1、 What is a true 'national standard hot-dip tube'?


In the construction steel market, the term 'national standard' is often abused. The true national standard hot-dip tube must meet all the requirements of GB/T 3091-2015 "Welded Steel Pipes for Low Pressure Fluid Transport".


This is fundamentally different from the common "enterprise standard" and "non-standard" products on the market:

2、 The "Three Protection Methods" of National Standard Hot Dip Pipes: Zinc Layer, Thread, and Material

1. Zinc layer: not just "thick"

The national standard requires the average thickness of the zinc layer to be ≥ 65 µ m.


But what truly determines the lifespan of rust prevention is the adhesion of the zinc layer.


After galvanizing, the national standard pipe needs to undergo chromate passivation treatment to form a dense oxide film on the surface of the zinc layer, which not only prevents the formation of white rust but also improves its affinity with the coating.


When wiping with hands, there should be no obvious black dust (zinc dust), which is an important visual indicator to determine whether it meets the national standard.


2. Thread: the lifeline of engineering connections

For pipes ranging from DN15 to DN100, the national standard requires the processing of cone pipe threads that comply with GB/T 7306 (R thread).


The thread should be smooth, without broken teeth or burrs;


The universal gauge can be smoothly screwed in, and the locking gauge cannot be screwed in more than the specified number of buckles;


When connecting with standard fittings (elbows, tees), the length of the joint and the sealing performance should meet the requirements of the specifications.


The threads of inferior non-standard pipes are often shallow and the taper is inconsistent, resulting in the use of raw material tape to wrap around them wildly on site, barely sealing and leaving a great risk of water leakage.


3. Material: "Proof of Origin" of the base pipe

The base pipe of the national standard hot-dip tube is usually made of Q195 or Q215 material. Although its strength is not as good as low-alloy steels such as Q355B, it has high elongation and good cold bending performance, making it very suitable for subsequent thread processing and on-site bending operations.


3、 Typical application scenario: Where must national standards be used?

The price of national standard hot-dip tubes is usually higher than that of non-standard products, but in the following scenarios, the use of national standards is a mandatory requirement.


Construction fire protection system (fire hydrants, sprinkler pipes)


Fire inspection has clear indicators for the wall thickness and zinc layer of pipes, and non-standard pipes are almost impossible to pass the inspection. Once judged as unqualified, the cost of rectification is much higher than the price difference of the pipe itself.


Municipal water supply and heating pipeline network


When it comes to public drinking water safety and heating reliability, design specifications usually require the use of pipes that comply with GB/T 3091 to ensure long-term corrosion resistance and connection reliability.


Materials supplied by Party A for large-scale general contracting projects


Central and state-owned enterprises have strict brand and specification management for materials supplied by Party A. Non standard management cannot enter the centralized procurement list and does not meet financial settlement and audit requirements.


4、 The "Five Step Method" for Procurement Acceptance

To avoid being "choked" by supervision or auditing on site, it is recommended to perform the following five steps of inspection upon receipt.


Check the label and warranty certificate


Check whether the label of each bundle of pipes is consistent with the quality assurance certificate, with a focus on whether the execution standard is clearly marked as GB/T 3091-2015, and whether the furnace batch number is traceable.


Measure the wall thickness with a vernier caliper


Randomly cut a section of pipe and measure the actual wall thickness with a caliper. If the actual measurement of a pipe with a nominal diameter of 3.25mm is less than 3.00mm, it can be basically judged as a non-standard product.


Magnetic thickness gauge for measuring zinc layer


Use a portable zinc layer thickness gauge to measure multiple points at different locations, and be cautious if the average value is below 60 µ m.


Trial accessory rotation


Take a standard DN20 or DN25 elbow for trial installation. If it can be smoothly screwed in 8-10 threads and feels tight, it indicates that the thread quality is qualified.


Bending test (destructive sampling)


Cut a small section of pipe and bend it 180 ° by hand or with the help of tools. The national standard pipe should be free of cracks, and the zinc layer should not peel off in large areas.
