20 # seamless pipe is a seamless pipe made of high-quality carbon structural steel as the base material, which is formed through perforation, hot rolling, cold rolling and other processes. Its core advantages include no welding seams, uniform wall thickness, excellent pressure bearing performance, and pure and stable material. It is widely used in high-pressure fluid transportation, boiler matching, chemical medium transportation, precision machinery manufacturing, hydraulic systems and other scenarios that require strict sealing and pressure bearing performance. Unlike ordinary welded pipes that are prone to leakage and uneven strength, 20 # seamless pipes have become a core material in high-end industrial and precision engineering fields due to their excellent mechanical properties and structural stability. This article combines practical experience from the front line, breaks away from template based expressions, and breaks down the practical points of grounding gas from five core dimensions: production process, core performance, specification selection, quality identification, and storage and use. 1、 20 # Seamless Pipe Core Process: Seamless Forming, Controllable Quality

The core competitiveness of 20 # seamless pipe lies in its seamless forming process and high-quality substrate. The production process is strictly standardized, and each step directly affects the pressure bearing performance and service life of the pipe. The specific process details are as follows:


Substrate characteristics: The core substrate is high-quality carbon structural steel of grade 20, belonging to the category of low carbon steel, with a carbon content between 0.17% and 0.24%. The material is pure and has extremely low impurity content. Harmful elements such as sulfur and phosphorus are strictly controlled, and it has good toughness, plasticity, and welding performance. At the same time, it has excellent compressive and impact resistance, and is suitable for high-pressure and high-frequency stress scenarios.


Core production process: Adopting an integrated process of "perforation hot rolling cold rolling finishing", the 20 # steel billet is first heated to around 1200 ℃, processed into hollow tubes through a perforating machine, and then precisely controlled in wall thickness and outer diameter by a hot rolling unit. Subsequently, the size accuracy is refined by cold rolling according to demand, and finally, the finished seamless tube is formed through straightening, flaw detection, pipe cutting, inspection and other finishing processes. There is no welding process throughout the entire process, which fundamentally avoids the hidden dangers of cracking and leakage in the welding seams of the welded pipes.

2、 Core Performance and Adaptation Scenarios: Accurately Matching High Voltage and Precision Requirements

The performance advantages of 20 # seamless pipe are concentrated in three aspects: pressure bearing, sealing, and processing. The adaptation scenarios are highly targeted and different from ordinary seamless pipes. The specific performance and adaptation scenarios are as follows:


Core mechanical properties: tensile strength can reach 410-550MPa, yield strength ≥ 245MPa, elongation ≥ 25%, impact energy (20 ℃) ≥ 39J, with good toughness and deformation resistance, able to withstand high pressure (conventional working pressure can reach 1.6-6.4MPa), and is not prone to fracture or deformation after long-term use; Uniform material, more stable performance after heat treatment, suitable for high and low temperature environments (-20 ℃ to 450 ℃).

Differences from other seamless pipes: Compared to Q235 seamless pipes, 20 # seamless pipes have purer material, higher pressure resistance, and better toughness, making them suitable for high-pressure precision scenarios; Compared to Q355 seamless pipe, it has better plasticity and welding performance, suitable for complex processing scenarios. Its price is between the two, and its cost-effectiveness is outstanding.


3、 Specification selection: Select outer diameter, wall thickness, and length according to the scenario, balancing practicality and safety

The specifications of 20 # seamless pipe are determined by three core parameters: outer diameter, wall thickness, and length. The selection core is to combine pressure requirements, conveying medium, and installation conditions to accurately match and avoid safety hazards or cost waste caused by non-compliance with specifications. The specific points are as follows:


Outer diameter selection (commonly 10mm-219mm):


1. 10mm-32mm (small diameter): Suitable for precision mechanical hydraulic oil pipes, small instrument conveying pipes, power threading pipes, etc., with fine size and low processing difficulty, suitable for small equipment matching.


2. 45mm-89mm (medium caliber): Suitable for conventional high-pressure fire-fighting pipelines, hydraulic system main pipelines, boiler auxiliary pipelines, etc., with strong versatility and a wide range of applications.         


3. 108mm-219mm (large diameter): Suitable for large steam pipelines, industrial high-pressure fluid conveying pipes, pressure vessel shells, etc., with strong pressure bearing capacity, suitable for heavy-duty and high flow scenarios.


Wall thickness selection (commonly 1.5mm-12mm):


1.5mm-3.0mm (thin-walled): Suitable for low-pressure precision conveying pipes, small hydraulic oil pipes, etc., lightweight, easy to process, and no high-strength pressure bearing requirements.         


2. 3.5mm-6.0mm (conventional wall thickness): Balancing pressure and economy, suitable for most high-pressure fluid transportation, boiler auxiliary pipelines and other scenarios, with outstanding cost-effectiveness and wide application.        


3. 7.0mm-12mm (thick wall): Strong pressure resistance, impact resistance, wear resistance, suitable for harsh scenarios such as high-pressure steam pipelines, heavy machinery pipelines, pressure vessels, etc., ensuring long-term stability during use.


Length selection: Conventional sizes are 6 meters, 9 meters, and 12 meters, and can be cut to any length according to actual needs; For batch engineering, it is recommended to choose a length of 6 or 9 meters to reduce cutting losses and improve construction efficiency; Precision machining scenarios can be customized with short lengths to reduce transportation and processing costs.


4、 Quality screening techniques to avoid common market traps

There are problems in the seamless pipe market, such as substandard materials, false size labeling, and substandard seamless processes. Professional testing equipment is not required, and quality can be quickly identified through simple observation and practical operation. The following points should be focused on:


Check the authenticity of the material: The high-quality 20 # seamless pipe material is pure, with a uniform metallic luster on the surface, without any dullness, color difference, or oxidation spots; Merchants can be required to provide material testing reports to verify parameters such as carbon content and mechanical properties, in order to avoid purchasing inferior products that impersonate 20 # steel with Q235 material.


Nuclear size accuracy: Measure the outer diameter and wall thickness with a caliper, and the actual size is qualified if the error between the actual size and the marked value is ≤± 0.1mm; Some merchants may falsely label the wall thickness (such as labeling 5.0mm but actually 4.5mm), which directly reduces the pressure bearing capacity. Long term use may lead to leakage and fracture, which needs to be carefully checked.


Appearance of the monitoring body: The pipe body is straight without bending, dents, scratches, or rust; The inner and outer walls are smooth and flat, without defects such as burrs, scars, sand holes, interlayers, etc; The cutting section is flat, without layering or impurities, and the material is uniform.


Mechanical performance testing: The high-quality 20 # seamless pipe is slightly bent without cracks, and the surface is lightly scratched with a hard object, with uniform scratches and no peeling or slag phenomenon; Poor quality pipes are prone to bending, cracking, and surface peeling, which cannot meet the requirements of high-pressure use.


Check qualification identification: The material (20 #), specifications, manufacturer, production date, and other information should be clearly marked on the packaging or body of regular products. Mechanical performance testing reports and non-destructive testing reports can be provided; Products without labels or reports, with no quality assurance, are strictly prohibited from being used in high-voltage and precision scenarios.


5、 Storage and use: Standardized operation to extend service life

The service life of 20 # seamless pipe is closely related to storage environment and operation. Reasonable and standardized storage and operation can avoid pipe corrosion and deformation, and fully utilize its pressure bearing and sealing advantages. The specific points are as follows:


Storage precautions: Store in a dry, ventilated, and sheltered indoor warehouse, strictly prohibit outdoor stacking, and keep away from corrosive environments such as humidity, acidity, alkalinity, salt spray, etc; Bottom wooden blocks or pallets should be placed to prevent direct contact with the ground and moisture; Stack neatly in layers, control the stacking height, and avoid deformation of the pipe body and scratches on the inner wall caused by compression; 20 # seamless pipes of different specifications and wall thicknesses should be stored separately and labeled to prevent confusion and misuse.
